How Botox Works

A dermatologist at RenGen Medical, PC, in New York, Dr. Steven Victor furnishes effective anti-wrinkle treatments including Botox injections. After earning his MD, Dr. Steven Victor underwent his residency training in dermatology at New York Medical College and several New York hospitals.

Botox is a drug that has both cosmetic and medical applications. In nature, a bacteria produces an agent called botulinum toxin, the chemical responsible for some cases of food poisoning. Botulinum toxin is especially effective at paralyzing muscles.

Researchers harnessed that ability to create an FDA-approved drug, marketed under the name Botox, that helps reduce the appearance of unsightly facial wrinkles. Doctors can also use it to treat conditions like overactive bladder and even migraines.

Botox injections usually achieve noticeable results within a few days. However, the drug’s effects are not permanent, lasting roughly three months. Over the long term, patients may wish to return periodically to undergo additional Botox treatments.
